Jonathan “Weasel” Gilbert
(Bethesda, MD)
Weasel’s show was the soundtrack to our school days in Maryland and his signature “days of the week” from Megalomanical Mondays to Frantic Fridays are still used by the filmmakers today as well as many in the DMV.
Jonathan moved from NYC to study at DC’s American University, where he helped little WHFS in Bethesda become the voice of the counterculture. In turn Maryland’s own Frank Zappa on one of his yearly trips home coined Jonathan, “Weasel,” after Zappa’s own album, “Weasels Ripped My Flesh.”
In its 12 years, Weasel’s show won awards from the Washington Area Music Association, Baltimore City Paper and The Baltimore Sun. His name appears in an exhibit of influential DJs at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
The rise of WHFS has become lore. A documentary film, “Feast Your Ears: The Story of WHFS 102.3 FM,” was released this year and feature DJs Damian Einstein, Cerphe Colwell and, of course, Weasel. After winning a handful of festivals, It will now appear locally on PBS’ WETA starting Septemeber 16, 2024.
